From the island of Zakinthos, we made our way across the straight to Katakolo. Katakolo is on the mainland of Greece at the northwest part of the Peloponnisos.

Katakolo is a cute port, it’s main claim to fame these days is the proximity to the ancient ruins of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. From Katakolo we took a short train ride to the town of Olympia, then walked to the ruins and one of the three museums.

The Olympic Games were hosted at this site for over 1,000 years. The ruins are significant and fairly well identified by signs. No amount of pictures can do it justice.

Looks so amazing! Hard to believe you were walking in the same place where people competed in the original Olympics. Mind blowing, really!
